When is the right time to move

Knowing when to move jobs is never easy. So often we hear “when I wasn’t looking, I was contacted about so many great roles, now I am looking there is nothing that I like”.
So how do you avoid this?

Some within our networks will remain in a constant state of “open to hearing about things” and then make a switch as soon as the right opportunity presents itself. Others feel the “time must be right”. Often they hesitate, hoping the role that they are in improves or that the right role will land in their lap when they are ready.

When moving between search firms, timing is everything – and the data backs it up.
Our latest market report highlights that the best time to move is when you are already in a role. Salary increases are higher, and you have more time to assess opportunities and make the decision that is right for you.

But beyond that, our data offers a clear insight into hiring trends – and when you should start keeping an eye out for your next move.

Hiring trends
Throughout last year, the distribution of new roles registered followed the same pattern as in 2023 and 2022. Breaking it down for 2024: Q1 (35% of all roles registered), Q2 (18%), Q3(16%), Q4(31%).

So Q1 saw the biggest hiring push, and early signs suggest that 2025 is following a similar pattern. In January 2025 we took on more than double the monthly average from last year.
Q2 and Q3 are quieter. Replacement roles are rife after the flurry of activity at the beginning of the year. Then Q4 picks up significantly as firms start to look to hiring for the new year ahead.

So, if you are sat reading this thinking you might be open to a move this year, now is the time to start looking. Waiting to ‘see how things go’ or ‘if things get better’ could result in you having fewer options and trying to move in a slower market.

Start conversations early
One of the biggest misconceptions about changing roles is that you need to be ready to move immediately. This is most certainly not the case. If you have a career plan you aren’t going to just pick a role because it is available at the time. To ensure your next move aligns with your long-term career goals you need to be proactive. You need to be networking, having informal conversations with firms you admire and ensuring that if the right role at the right company arises, you know about it.

The reality is that making a move takes time. From the first conversation to signing a contract, most searches take 4-6 weeks minimum. Add in a notice period and this could be up to 18 weeks before stepping into a new role. That is why conversations need to be started before the need to move.

2026 target
For those thinking ahead, the best way to prepare for a move in January 2026 is to start engaging early and be talking to a recruiter by summer. Why? Because the biggest job rush happens in September and October. By then, those that have been proactive are already known to recruiters and hiring managers. Those who remain reactive until autumn risk missing out on the most attractive roles.

In short, if you want to move next year, do not wait until the end of the year to start looking. Start building relationships now, get a feel for the market, and put yourself in the strongest possible position to capitalise on the right opportunities.
You don’t have to decide to move today, but if you want to keep your options open, now is the time to start the conversation.
